Fort Jackson was created in 1917 (as Camp Jackson) as the United States entered World War I. At the conclusion of World War I, Camp Jackson was shut down and the Camp was abandoned 25 April 1922 pursuant to General Orders No. 33, War Department, 27 July 1921. Camp Jackson was reactivated for World War II. At the conclusion of World War II, the post was to have been inactivated by 1950; however, the outbreak of the Korean War caused the Post to remain active and it remains an active duty post in the early 21st Century.
Encompassing 52,000 acres east of Columbia, Fort Jackson is the largest, most active Initial Entry Training Center in the US Army, providing training to 34% of new soldiers each year and 69% of women entering the Army. The fort includes 50 ranges, 1,000 buildings, and 41,000 soldiers who are trained each year. An additional 19,000 soldiers attend the Soldier Support Institute, Chaplain Center, Polygraph School and Drill Sergeant School. Several museums describe America’s military history and trace Fort Jackson’s contribution to America’s military power. More than 100,000 family members visit Columbia each year to attend Friday afternoon basic training graduation, a stirringly patriotic event that takes place 41 times during the year. The Army Training Center and Fort Jackson executes Basic Combat Training also called Boot Camp and Advanced Individual Training; enhances our Drill Sergeant and Cadre Leader Training; and synchronizes our Service Support Operating Systems in order to effectively transform civilians, train Soldiers, and develop leaders who live the Warrior Ethos, are physically tough, mentally adaptive, and able to contribute to the success of their first unit of assignment supporting ARFORGEN requirements for both the Operational Army and the Generating Force.
